Summer Fire Safety

Mulch smoldering just prior to igniting.

I learn something new every day. A good friend of our family experienced a fire because the mulch around his house combusted. Mulch that is piled more that a couple inches deep can spontaneously catch fire because it builds up heat. Once the mulch ignites, it easily spreads throughout the mulched area. Use caution when spreading mulch and don’t let a big mulch load sit too long in the heat of the sun. For more information, go to the National Fire Protection Association and search Summer fires raise awareness about how to keep mulch decorative and not destructive.
